Last week I attended the opening night of the show La Traviata at the Vancouver Opera. We were also invited backstage for an exclusive media event to check out the stage and meet some of the cast the night prior to the opening. I’m truly amazed by the stage setup and the Gatsby era style of fashion. There’s a lot of work put into this production and we were able to speak with the technical director. She was responsible for setting up the stage and making sure the cast can safely move around with ease. The engineering involved with the stage involves being able to take it down and move it to a different stage across Canada as is. This means the measurements and props have to be exact and carefully planned out.

The story is about Violetta, a famous Parisian courtesan, who is consumed by love and a life-threatening illness. Violetta is played by Emily Dorn and her love interest Andrew Haji as Alfredo Germont. Moulin Rouge and Pretty Woman are a couple of my favorite movies that happened to be majorly influenced by this story. I’m sure most of you have seen one if not both of these movies and so if you watch the play you can expect to see some similarities in the storyline. The performance lasts for about 2 hours and 50 minutes with 2 intermissions and is sung in Italian with English subtitles.

mysterious, altering,
